GARDEN ROUTE

Wilderness

As far back as the late 1800's the reputation of Wilderness, with its natural bounty of rivers and lakes and intrinsic peace & tranquility, ideal for seaside holidays, was laid in a little stone farmhouse.

A seaside boarding house was established in the old homestead, and so began the tradition of hospitality that has made this exquisite resort famous all over the world.

Wilderness lies 15km east of George, between the Kaaimans River and the Goukamma Nature Reserve. Mossel Bay is 65km South West of Wilderness, Sedgefield is 26km east, Knysna 45km east  & Plettenberg Bay lies 85km east of Wilderness. Wilderness is known as the "Jewel of the Garden Route!"  It is renowned for its vast stretches of beach, its tranquility and the absence of windswept headlands and wild, stormy seas.  Wilderness overlooks not only the sea, but also the placid lagoon (Touw River Estuary), the Serpentine, which meanders between the Touw River, Island Lake and Rondevlei.  This is a favorite water skiing venue, drawing enthusiasts from far and wide.

Wilderness has a 2 500 ha National Park with five rivers and five lakes, two estuaries and 18km of Southern Cape coastline recently classified as a World Heritage Site with an abundance of Bird species .

The National Parks Board control and oversee development in the area which the majority of residents fully endorse as we aim to maintain the Beautiful Natural surroundings with which we are blessed.

Wilderness has a Village ambience with peace, tranquility and friendly folk being of key importance.  Long walks on the beach or frequent the many Nature Trails ensures a Healthy Lifestyle.

Situated on the coast and midway between many Tourist destinations, makes this the ideal location. A Bonus is that the Whales and Dolphins frequent the Ocean almost daily from July/August to March/April and is a joy to behold.

The many prestigious Golf Courses, Fancourt, Sparrebosch and Oubaai, to name just three, are World Renown and will keep you entertained daily.

The George Airport is a mere 20 minute drive away therefore Wilderness is easily accessible to all the major centres of South Africa and abroad.

Many Wilderness residents shop in George which is a scenic 10 minute drive through the Kaaimans River Pass. Yet the Village has an abundance of shops, restaurants and sidewalk cafés giving all the ideal opportunity to remain right here.
